Collection
The collection of the Museum of Communication aims to archive the history of communication in Switzerland for future generations. It is therefore an important store of Swiss cultural heritage. Overall, it comprises some 3 million postage stamps, 500,000 photographs, 50,000 three-dimensional objects, 50,000 posters and plans as well as 5,000 films.
The world of communication in all its diversity, from the history of the postal services to telecommunication and digital data (Internet and social media) is carefully maintained, unlocked and made accessible.
The museum’s objects are recorded in our catalogue, which is accessible to the wider public: from a hand-cranked telephone to curiosities from the world of philately to the small Saurer post bus from 1939. The database also contains an extensive photographic collection, posters, sections of the stamp collection and diagrams from the history of Swiss telecommunication.

Collection strategy
The first mobile telephone in Switzerland. An influencer’s high heels. A self-driving post bus from the test centre. The Museum of Communication’s collection reflects the past, the present and the future. However: what is added to the collection – and what is not? Why will my stamp collection and my grandmother’s historical radio set not necessarily enter the collection? Can we collect the future? Is objectivity even possible when building a collection? The museum’s new collection strategy provides the answers.
