The poet

Haller wrote some highly regarded poetry, including the classic "Die Alpen", which made a major contribution to the emergence of the Alpine tourism industry in Switzerland. And the elegy written on the death of his beloved Mariane moved Europe's educated elite to tears. Letters from critics, publishers and readers gave the poet first-hand feedback on his works. The numerous editions and translations of his collection of poems show how popular Haller was with the public. As many as 11 authorised editions appeared in German during his lifetime, as well as 27 translations into French, Italian, English, Dutch, Swedish and Russian. Haller made a conscious effort to promote his image as a "learned poet".

The "Lyrikmaschine" website of Viennese author Martin Auer shows how a present-day writer seeks contact with his public. He offers extracts of his work in words, pictures and sound, as well as an opportunity to give feedback.
