"Telegraphy" in the Permanent Exhibition
Telegraph – Live Wire
Electric current revolutionized communication. Samuel Morse linked two American cities – Washington D.C. and Baltimore – with his electric telegraph in 1844. From the mid 19th century onwards, prices and stock quotes, «wanted» alerts for missing people, military commands and all kinds of news began to race around the globe.
This section of the exhibition also examines the important role of telegraphing in the development of print media and journalism.
«Mr. Moser and the World»
The virtual telegraph operator, Mr. Moser, uses an authentic Morse machine to process multiple news items from around the world at the telegraph office in Zurich on January 6, 1889.
